Biography
Gray Simpson
b. 1975 in Liverpool
Lives and works in Margate, UK

Gray Simpson is a figurative painter based in Margate, UK. His practice centres on the human figure as a site of effort, concentration, and self-directed change, using painting as a way of examining how commitment and application shape form over time.

Working primarily in oils, Simpson builds his paintings through layered accumulation and revision, allowing images to develop gradually across multiple sessions. Recent works incorporate gridded structures as systems of measurement and constraint, foregrounding consistency and progress over outcome. Figures negotiate these frameworks unevenly, reinforcing tensions between intention and limitation, control and adaptation. Their awkward and physically demanding poses require focus, adjustment and strain to sustain.

These moments are not presented as feats, but as ongoing attempts: provisional, attentive, and unresolved.

Informed by the history of figurative painting and grounded in contemporary concerns around self-measurement and discipline, Simpson’s paintings do not present fixed narratives. Instead, they register moments of effort, vulnerability, and persistence. Gestural passages sit alongside areas of restraint, and the visible build-up of the surface makes process central to meaning.
